This spiral bound, easy to use booklet is a supplement to The Roaring of the Sacred River, a book written that perforce editorially excluded the material found here. It has been updated a number of time since the publication of The Roaring, most recently in 2006.
The first section: A Wilderness Rite of Passage for Youth (Teacher's Edition) proposes the implementation of a prototypal wilderness rite of passage among modern adolescents graduating from high school. It is written to teachers, counselors, parents, and interested professionals who contemplate the idea of conducting such a rite. It is offered as a complement to the youth handbook Lost Borders: Coming of Age in the Wilderness, and its discussion is based on the experience with hundreds of young people who voluntarily elected to undergo a solitary fast in the wilderness as a means of formalizing their passage from childhood to adulthood.
The second section: Technical Guide to Threshold Safety presents vital information needed by any person conducting group vision fasts in wilderness places. Here are the nuts-and-bolts of survival on the physical plane. It sets down guidelines and rules of procedure for a new (yet very old) genre of wilderness activity. This is the bottom line of the vision fast, survival of the physical/psychological/mental/spiritual ordeal of the wilderness threshold. Included is an appendix containing prototypes of Medical and Liability forms, Incident and Accident Report form, Guidelines for Handling an Accident, Wilderness Ethics (created by the Wilderness Guides Council), etc.
